National Association of Theatre Owners The National Association of Theatre Owners is the largest exhibition trade organization in the world, representing more than 29,000 movie screens in all 50 states, and additional cinemas in 50 countries worldwide. NATO membership includes the largest cinema chains in the world and hundreds of independent theater owners too. NATO was founded in 1965 by the merger of the largest movie-theater trade organizations, the Theater Owners of America and the Allied States Association of Motion Picture Exhibitors. Headquartered in Washington, D.C., with a second office in North Hollywood, California, NATO represents its members in the heart of the nation's capital as well as the center of the entertainment industry. From these vantage points, NATO helps exhibition influence federal policy-making and work with movie distributors on all areas of mutual concern, from new technologies to legislation, marketing, and First Amendment issues. NATO provides its members with unique services available nowhere else: A full-time professional staff to provide information and guidance to members. Boxoffice is the official magazine of NATO. ShoWest is the annual motion picture convention established by NATO in 1975; it is usually held in March, and is the largest and most notable film convention in the world. In 1980, NATO began presenting the American Movie Awards, with the winners selected based on voting by theater patrons. Various legal difficulties prevented the awards from being presented in 1981, and the event was discontinued after the 1982 awards due to competition from other awards shows.
