The Electric Cinema The Electric Cinema in Birmingham is the oldest working movie theater in the United Kingdom. Built in 1909, it remains the only independent cinema left in the city today. On December 30, 1909, theater showed its first film. In 1922, it was renamed 'Select Cinema,' showing a program of silent movies. However, on November 14, 1931, theater has been closed. In 1937, architect Cecil Filmore added a gallery upstairs and theater became the 399-seat 'Tatler News Theatre.' In the 1950s, with television becoming popular, the theater became 'The Jacey Cartoon Theatre.' In the 1960s, it became 'The Jacey Film Theatre,' mainly showing a program of art house movies. In 1980, 2nd screen was added upstairs and theater became 'The Classic.' In 1993, theater was renamed back to 'The Electric' and became a two screen repertory venue. In 2004, Thomas Lawes Media Ltd has bought the theater to make it a local filmmaking community center. After a 0.25m pound renovation ($0.399m), the theater reopened on December 17, 2004. The building was restored to its original 1930s art deco look. The theater's bar/cafe offers a good range of drinks, antipasti, cakes, handmade ice creams and chocolates, coffee and tea. . . . .
