Odeon UCI
Odeon United Cinemas International is the Europe's leading theater chain and the largest theater chain in the United Kingdom. It is wholly owned by Terra Firma Capital Partners. Odeon UCI also operates in Ireland, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Austria and Brazil. It is one of the largest motion picture exhibitors outside of North America. Odeon Cinemas was founded by Oscar Deutsch in 1928. The first theater opened by Deutsch was located in Brierley Hill, West Midlands but the first theater opened under the “Odeon” brand was located in Perry Barr, Birmingham, UK. The name "Nickelodeon" had appeared at the beginning of 20th Century and was widely used to describe small theaters in the United States. By 1930, "Odeon" was a household name and the cinemas known for their maritime-inspired Art Deco architecture. This style was first used in 1930 on the cinema at Perry Barr in Birmingham, which was bought by Deutsch to expand the chain. He liked the style so much that he commissioned the architect, Harry Weedon, to design his future buildings. In 1941, Odeon was acquired by J. Arthur Rank who had interests in film production and distribution. Odeon remained a part of The Rank Organization for a further 58 years. An extensive re-branding campaign in 1998 further re-enforced Odeon's position as market leader in the UK and introduced "Fanatical About Film" to British moviegoers. The re-branding and refurbishment campaign culminated in the 3 million pounds upgrade of the flagship cinema, the Odeon Leicester Square. On February 21, 2000, Odeon was sold to Cinven, who merged the newly re-branded Odeon chain with their existing ABC cinema chain. The resulting chain of cinemas were all re-branded and Odeon enjoyed over two years of continuing positive growth. Following this success, Cinven sold Odeon to a consortium of investors early in 2003. The principal partners in the purchase were Germany-based WestLB AG, The Entertainment Group, and Robert Tchenguiz of Rotch. Private equity firm Terra Firma acquired Odeon in September 2004 and UCI in October 2004. UCI was formed as a partnership of Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios initially to build cinemas in the UK. UCI operates theaters in Ireland, Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy and Portugal. UCI has become the leading exhibitor chain in Spain by purchasing the Warner Lusomundo Sogecable theater chain as well as the AMC circuit in Spain and Portugal. It has also strengthened its position in the Italian market by acquiring three theaters from Europlex and is now the market leader in Italy.
