Radio Telefís Éireann (RTÉ)
Radio Eireann, RTE's predecessor, began radio service on January 1, 1926, and television service on December 31, 1961. RTE was founded on June 1, 1960. The company serves Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. RTE is a statutory body run by a board appointed by the Irish government. RTE, headquartered in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, operates two television channels, RTE One and RTE Two and four radio stations, RTE Radio 1, RTE 2 fm, RTE Lyric fm and RTE Raidio Na Gaeltachta. RTE also publishes Ireland's entertainment magazine, the RTE Guide, and operates Ireland's leading teletext service, RTE Aertel. RTE was one of 23 founding organizations of the European Broadcasting Union in 1950. RTE is also a major contributor to the arts in Ireland and supports five performing groups - the RTE National Symphony Orchestra, the RTE Concert Orchestra, the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet, the RTE Philharmonic Choir and RTE Cor na nOg. The RTE Libraries and Archives collections consist of radio and television programs, still images, production files, scripts, music scores and manuscripts. Television licence fee is the main source of revenue for RTE. Failure to possess a valid television licence can result in a fine and a criminal record. Revenue: 440.8 million euros (2008).
