CJ Entertainment CJ Entertainment is a South Korean entertainment company, which develops, produces and distributes films, music, video games and television shows. The company was founded in June 1995 by Jay-hyun Lee and Mie-kyung Lee. CJ Entertainment derives its name from the sugar mill company Cheil Jedang, which was founded in 1953 and was once the parent of Samsung, a conglomerate started in 1938 by Jay-hyun and Mie-kyung's grandfather Byung-chul Lee. Samsung was the first South Korean company to hold discussions with DreamWorks during the mid-1990s, but a deal could not be reached. In late 1994, CJ became independent of Samsung. In 1995, while still at Samsung, Mie-kyung Lee learned that DreamWorks was looking for investors, so she moved over to CJ to head the company's entertainment division. After presenting the motion picture business to her brother as a viable area of expansion, CJ made the deal with DreamWorks. "We looked at our food company, and we made a decision that we really had to take it to the next level and extend our company," said Mie-kyung, vice chairman of CJ Entertainment. "The most valuable thing that we had was our relationship with our customers. The three values that my brother thinks are the most important to really give to the customers are joy, health and convenience." Then CJ Entertainment teamed with Australia's Village Roadshow and Hong Kong's Golden Harvest to create CJ CGV, South Korea's first multiplex chain. Through its state-of-the-art cinema chain throughout the country and wide selection of titles, the company is providing an outstanding entertainment experience to audiences of all ages. Local films accounted for 25% of the South Korea box office, meanwhile there was a quota which mandated that every screen in the country had to play South Korean movies at least 40% of the time. Now local titles account for nearly 60% of South Korean box office. During the first quarter of 2005, CJ Entertainment's distribution market share, including local and foreign releases, was 31.3%. Local film releases accounted for more than half of that figure. CJ Entertainment serves the U.S. market through its Los Angeles office. CJ has also entered into a venture with Japan's Kadokawa Shoten Publishing Co. to develop joint projects. CJ has acquired CS' Primus circuit and rolled CS' international sales arm into its own. CJ Entertainment operates the nation's leading music and lifestyle channels (KMTV and the Food Channel), movie channel Home CGV, a joint-venture documentary channel with National Geographic, and CGV Choice, South Korea's first digital pay-per-view service. Overall, the company has about 12.5 million cable subscribers and 1.7 million satellite subscribers, making it the nation's second-largest program provider. "We feel we have a responsibility to reward our audience's appetite with a wide range of movies," Mie-kyung Lee said. CJ Entertainment plans to produce approximately 20 - 25 films per year. . . . .
