“The Bank Job” (2008) overview

[ “The Bank Job” official poster ]

This film reveals what was hidden for the first time. The story involves murder, corruption and a sex scandal with links to the British Royal Family - a story in which the thieves were the most innocent people involved.

The real story of how one of the biggest robberies in British history took place with no arrests ever made nor money ever recovered.

“The Bank Job” is based on the true story of the 1971 Baker Street bank robbery which was prevented from being told for over thirty years because of a Government gagging order.

In September 1971, thieves tunneled into the vault of a bank in London's Baker Street and looted safe deposit boxes of cash and jewelry worth over three million pounds. None of it was recovered. Nobody was ever arrested.

The robbery made headlines for a few days and then disappeared - the result of a 'D' Notice, gagging the press...

Supercilious spy Tim Everett (Richard Lintern) promises to get his lover Martine Love (Saffron Burrows) out of trouble from a drug bust if she puts together a gang to rob the bank.

Martine goes back to her old stomping grounds to recruit Terry Leather (portrayed by Jason Statham) along with their old mates, photographer Kevin Swain (Stephen Campbell Moore) and part-time actor Dave Shilling (Daniel Mays).

A car dealer with a criminal past and new family, Terry Leather has always avoided major-league scams. But when Martine, a beautiful model from his old neighborhood, offers him a lead on a foolproof bank hit on London's Baker Street, Terry recognizes the opportunity of a lifetime.

Martine targets a roomful of safe deposit boxes worth millions in cash and jewelry. But Terry and his crew don't realize the boxes also contain a treasure trove of dirty secrets - secrets that will thrust them into a deadly web of corruption and illicit scandal that spans London's criminal underworld, the highest echelons of the British government, and the Royal Family itself.

Although Martine promises a roomful of safe deposit boxes containing untold millions in cash and jewelry, Terry turns out that her motivations aren't financial.

Martine is being pressured by the British spy forces, who are determined to procure sexually incriminating photos of a member of the royal family that are being used for blackmail purposes by Michael X (Peter De Jersey), a real-life Trinidadian gangster-cum-Black Power leader who was eventually hanged for murder in Trinidad.

Although the robbery is successful, Terry and his gang suddenly find themselves being pursued not only by the agents of British secret service but also by a ruthless gangster (David Suchet) looking to retrieve a ledger detailing his payoffs to the local police...
