“The Other Boleyn Girl” (2008) overview “The Other Boleyn Girl” is a sensual and sumptuous story of romance, intrigue and betrayal. Plot centers on the epic backdrop of the defining period in English history. This is a tale of two beautiful sisters who driven by their family's blind ambition compete for the love of the handsome and passionate King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). Both Mary and Anne will share the King's bed, but only the one whom Henry loves the most will rise to the throne and take power as his Queen of England. Based on the novel by British author Philippa Gregory, a Justin Chadwick film focuses on Mary (Scarlett Johansson) and Anne (Natalie Portman) as their father, Thomas Boleyn (Mark Rylance), and uncle, the Duke of Norfolk (David Morrissey), conspire for one of them to win the king's fancy while their mother (Kristin Scott Thomas) looks on in disgust. Mary is the first to catch the King's eye, but is cast aside in favour of the dazzling Anne, whose passionate nature and relentless pursuit of the crown propel her towards her doom. Anne Boleyn was the one who managed to stay alive while married to England's King Henry VIII for 1,000 days, but her sister Mary in "The Other Boleyn Girl" would have been his queen if only she had been better at making babies. Leaving behind the simplicity of country life, the girls are thrust into the dangerous and thrilling world of court life – and what began as a bid to help their family develops into a ruthless rivalry between Anne and Mary for the love of the king. That was always the problem for Tudors whose line's grip on the throne was invariably threatened by the lack of a son, even though it would be daughter Elizabeth who reigned in the nation's golden age. Initially, Mary wins King Henry’s favor and becomes his mistress, bearing him an illegitimate child. But Anne, clever, conniving, and fearless, edges aside both her sister and Henry’s wife, Queen Katherine of Aragon, in her relentless pursuit of the king. Despite Mary's genuine feelings for Henry, her sister Anne has her sights set on the ultimate prize; Anne will not stop until she is Queen of England. As the Boleyn girls battle for the love of a king – one driven by ambition, the other by true affection – England is torn apart. Despite the dramatic consequences, the Boleyn girls ultimately find strength and loyalty in each other, and they remain forever connected by their bond as sisters. Scarlett Johansson's character grows the most in the film and once again actress has shown versatility of her talent. Ana Torrent makes a strong impression too as the dismayed and discarded Queen Katharine of Aragon. The Duke of Norfolk becomes the main villain of the piece, ruthlessly determined to place one or the other of his brother-in-law's pretty daughters into the king's bed in order to enrich the family. Lady Elizabeth registers her disdain for the proceedings more with her powerful gaze than any pungency in the lines of dialogue.
