“Married Life” (2007) overview [ “Married Life” official poster ] A 1940s story based on the beautifully written book "Five Roundabouts to Heaven." “Married Life” draws viewers into a story that is utterly unique. After several years of marriage, Harry Allen (Chris Cooper) has begun cheating on his wife Pat (Patricia Clarkson) with the vivacious, young Kay (Rachel McAdams). But the long-suffering wife may not be as long-suffering as her husband believes. Rather than see Pat go through the humiliation of a divorce, Harry plots to kill her instead. Meanwhile, Harry's best friend Richard (Pierce Brosnan) tries to steal Kay all for himself... It is a suspenseful melodrama and a dark comedy simultaneously. It's a look at stock characters who all turn out to be more than we expect. Film is wonderfully shot. Performances are top notch – a true ensemble cast who look and sound like they are from a bygone era. Pierce Brosnan and Patricia Clarkson seem to be having a good time and give the movie most of its humor, especially Brosnan, who can make you laugh just by looking put out and irritated. Entertainment Weekly: "… congratulates its audience on a sophisticated, humorous complicity in the obvious immorality of Harry's murder plans…" Los Angeles Times: "… detours into a melodramatic comedy of manners and ends up confused." The New York Times: "Beyond examining the age-old battle of the sexes within the confines of a long-term relationship, the movie is apolitical." |
