South West Screen
South West Screen is the regional film agency for South West region of England. It was founded in 2001 by the UK Film Council, the South West of England Regional Development Agency and Skillset >>>>. SWS' main areas of activity - Promoting region as a filming location - Growing local businesses - Developing talent and film industry - Reaching new audiences - Providing investments in innovations - Influencing public opinion - Script critique service SWS works with partners and cluster groups across the region, providing information, training, funding and connecting people. SWS has a database of over 5,000 members of the creative media industries. The South West has over 60 film societies. South West is one of the regions of England covering 9,200 sq mi (23,800 sq km) including Bristol, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, Wiltshire and the Isles of Scilly. The region has a population of almost five million, and includes the area often known as the West Country or Wessex. The South West of England occupies 18% of its land and extends 215 mi (350 km) from North to South. With a truly diverse cultural and geographical landscape, it is the home to three World Heritage sites and 60% of British stock of heritage coastline. South West is home to world class festivals including Encounters, the UK's leading short film festival; The International Screenwriters' Festival; and Wildscreen, the world's largest wildlife film festival. The South West generates around 153m pounds ($257m) of television production each year. In 2008 SWS: helped 4,639 companies directly; registered 66m pounds ($110.8m) in inward investment through filming in the region; created 482 jobs; registered 1,912 filming days; leveraged 7.15m pounds ($12m) in total funds; made awards worth 0.68m pounds ($1.14m) and direct investments of 0.78m pounds ($1.3m). Shot in Wells, Somerset, “Hot Fuzz” grossed $80 million worldwide from its theater release. Over one million DVDs were sold in the UK in the first four weeks of its release and it won the award for Best Comedy at the Empire Awards in March 2008. Every year, productions shooting in the region bring 40m pounds ($67.2m) to the South West. He began his production career at the BBC in Bristol, Pebble Mill and Manchester before moving to London as Head of Network Features in 1980. He was responsible for a range of award-winning programs including “Live Aid” and “River Journeys.” From 1999 to 2004, he was the Head of Bournemouth Media School and also chaired a DCMS/Skillset enquiry into the training needs of the audio-visual industries. Laughton is a Fellow of the Royal Television Society and was awarded the Society's Gold Medal in 1999. Helen Brunsdon She has worked in animation industry for 17 years, firstly joining BBC as a production coordinator and then as an assistant for the Cardiff International Animation Festival, Wales. In 1993, she joined Aardman Animations as a producer and made two “World Faith” films for S4C (Sianel Pedwar Cymru / Channel Four Wales). She worked as a production manager on “Wife of Bath” directed by Joanna Quinn, which received an Academy Award nomination. Brunsdon has been on the advisory board for Animated Encounters and was a special jury member for SICAF (Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival, South Korea) in 2004 and Trickfilm festival (Stuttgart, Germany) in 2007. Terry Corby He is the Chairman of Cornwall Media, and the Head of Marketing for Strategy & Thought Leadership at Accenture, the management consulting, technology and outsourcing company. He also was a Head of Communications and Events at American Express and Sainsbury's. He was a founding director of The Talent Foundation, a not-for-profit organization, and is an Advisory Board Director of Critical Eye (Europe's Center for Business Leadership). Peter Ellis He has taught film at the London Film School, and in China and Australia. He started his career in entertainment industry as an assistant film editor and then went on to direct drama and documentaries. Ellis has been an actor at the Old Vic Company, as well as in film and on TV. He spent 16 years playing Inspector Brownlow on “The Bill” as well as being a semi regular in “Coronation Street,” “Emmerdale,” “Les Dawson” shows and Victoria Wood's “Acorn Antiques.” Ellis is also a board member of Four Corners Film Workshop in the East End of London and Phoenix Arts in Exeter. Daniel Hewitt As an online content director, he is working with social networks to develop partnerships between them and traditional media companies. Jonathan Jackson He is a Chartered Management Accountant with over 12 years experience in media and entertainment, working in film and television, radio, records and music publishing. He is currently Chief Operating Officer at Digital Rights Group, the UK's largest independent TV distributor. Brian Leonard He is a Director of BISL (Business In Sport and Leisure) and chairs their Tourism Working Group. He is also the chairman of the Video Games Working Group at the UK Council for Child Internet Safety. Prior to that, he worked with the Department of Culture, Media and Sport where his responsibilities included the Creative Economy Program. He was a Director of Environment Protection and Regional Director of the Government Office for the South West of England. Rebecca O'Brien As a film producer she has made 10 feature films for 20 years. Her works include “Land and Freedom,” “Sweet Sixteen” and “My Name is Joe.” In 2006, her “The Wind That Shakes the Barley,” on the Irish War of Independence, won Golden Palm (Palme d'Or) at the Cannes Film Festival. O'Brien co-owns a production company Sixteen Films. She is also a board member of the UK Film Council. Charles Wace He started his career in newspapers before moving to BBC where he worked as a reporter and producer. In 1988, he founded TwoFour that became one of the largest regional entertainment companies. In January 2008, Wace was elected as council chair of Producers Alliance for Cinema and Television (the UK independent trade body Pact). He was awarded the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year Award for Technology & Communication South Region 2007. Chris Wensley He is a freelance educational media consultant working for Skillset to establish its network of Screen and Media Academies to develop new talent in film and media. He was a director of the HEFCE-funded Centre for Excellence in Media Practice at Bournemouth University. Dan Wright He is a partner at Osborne Clarke, a Bristol law firm. He has worked with a number of creative businesses and provides seminars for educational establishments including the University of Bristol. . . . .
