The Damascus International Film Festival The Damascus International Film Festival (DIFF) is an important annual cultural event that aims to provide and support the Syrian and international art of movie making. First Syrian international film festival was held in 1956 during the Damascus International Fair. Festival line-up included movies from Arab countries, as well as United Kingdom, France, Italy, India, Yugoslavia and Soviet Union. Festival lasted for two weeks. International Festival of Youth Cinema Films took place in Damascus in 1972. Officially presented on October 20, 1979, the Damascus International Film Festival became largest film market in the Middle East and one of the most popular cultural events in the oldest city on the planet. The 2010 Damascus International Film Festival will be held on 7-13 November, 2010. The DIFF accepts foreign films in original languages with Arabic, English or French subtitles. The festival organizers cover shipping and insurance costs for participating films. The festival is working thanks to support of the Syrian National Film Organization and the Ministry of Culture.
